CITES

The crab-eating macaque is listed as an Appendix I species in CITES.

Initial Review:

Malaysia banned the export of the long-tailed macaque on December 21, 1992. M. fascicularis was first considered by CITES in the Review of Significant Trade (Phase 2) in 1993. Following Indonesia’s review of the species, it was considered a candidate to include in the 2004 review. The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) completed a review on the species from 1998-2008. They found that the total number of recorded exports of the species from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam (Range States) increased 188% between 1999 and 2003 (40,153) to 115,638 between 2004 and 2008. Additionally, a comparison of trade of  M. fascicularis compared to other species of macaque and found that the trade of the long-tailed macaque is significantly higher as shown in the graph.
